The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy EvaluationToday, nurses have become highly involved in the policy making process. The primary reason for their high involvement is the nature of the role they play in the society (Abhicharttibutra et al., 2017). As primary care givers, nurses need to ensure that healthcare policies have positive influence on their roles and responsibilities as well as the welfare of the patients (Abhicharttibutra et al., 2017). Nurses also have an important role and capacity to not only influence current and future policy making process, but also in evaluating the effectiveness of the healthcare policy.Several opportunities exist for the RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy evaluation or review. Some opportunities for policy review include engaging stakeholders and gathering evidence on efficiency of policy (CDC, 2019). Engaging stakeholders involves consulting with politicians, patients, and other healthcare stakeholders on the impact ofa policy. Such consultations will help in identifying weaknesses and strengths of the policy enabling nurses to make critical decisions going forward regarding the policy. However, engaging stakeholders has some challenges including difficulty in getting audience or appointments with stakeholders and inability to influence their perspectives (Kallus & Zhou, 2018).
