He led a successful racially integrated band amidst the racial segregation. The success made him to be known as “King of Swing” (Mour, 2014). At the time, African Americans were seen as less intelligent, as such, their careers in music were diminished even though they possessed fantastic skills in the music genre. I believe that coming from a racial minority group that also suffered the wrath of racial discrimination from the Ku Klux Klan although not to an equal magnitude as the Blacks, Benny Goodman understood the need for giving equal opportunity. Therefore, he did not hesitate to enlist talented people of colour in his band.
