He/she believes that such music should not belong among decent people. In fact, he/she compares it with the substandard dime novels and the grease-dripping doughnut, all which exist in the midst of refined items, and goes ahead to mention that jazz like these items are a manifestation of “low streak in man's tastes”. According to the author, the new music would not have existed had the process of human civilization been more effective than it was. The author believes that jazz is not great music because it focusses on the melody rather than the harmony. Normally, music comprises of the melody and harmonics among other elements. The melody is the sound that is easier to perceive, while the harmonics is the combination of notes that makes the song more pleasing to the listener. The instruments used to play jazz included the Negro banjo and kettle-drums could not create harmony. Therefore, the sound was “noisy”. As such, the composition of jazz was simplistic
