He has been and continues to be an inspiration to many people and a symbol of a strong leader. However, his controversial nature has resulted in many people labeling his as a dictator. Despite the negative perception and stereotype by many people, the Cuban leader is without a doubt one of the few world leaders who exhibits qualities of strong leadership. Many individuals have questioned his leadership style, but one fact is that he has been able to unify the once volatile country Cuba. Fidel Castro was born in 1926 (LeoGrande, 59). He showed his leadership skills at a very young age by engaging in sugar cane farming which enabled him to be financially successful (LeoGrande, 59). He enrolled at the University of Havana in 1945 to study law (LeoGrande, 59). While at the university he was actively involved in student activism and remained vocal on his strong opposition of the US influence in Latin America and Caribbean (LeoGrande, 59). He became the prime minister until 1976 when he assumed the presidency of Cuba until 2008 when he stepped down due to ill health
