Research identifies that children emulate the character and personality traits of their parents (Sherr et al., 2017). Conversely, parents who are absent or neglect their children place them at greater risk of exposure to predators or negative role models (Ford et al., 2007). Thus, being a positive role model is an essential aspect of effective parenting, which can be achieved through the following: 1) frequent communication, encouraging a healthier relationship between parents and children; 2) modeling behaviors that parents want children to develop, such as showing children how to respond to conflict in a positive manner; and 3) treating children with respect and providing them appropriate levels of independence, which helps them learn to respect others and develop autonomy. The first key aspect of being a positive role model is maintaining open and frequent communication with
