Group dynamics is defined as the interactions between group members and the group as a whole. Effective group dynamics foster an environment that supports goal attainment and meeting socio-emotional needs of its members (Toseland, 2017). Four elements within the group dynamic that the social worker should assess are communication styles and interactional patterns between group members, a sense of unity and cohesion, social integration and influence, and group culture (Toseland, 2017). The social worker should be aware of the messages that are being communicated within the group dynamic, seek to understand their meaning, and communicate these back to the group as a whole. The social worker should assess subgroups to ensure these are conducive to the group environment and address them when they are not. The social worker should assess how the group environment impacts individuals of different cultural backgrounds and physical, mental, and developmental limitations, and how the culture of the group as whole models social work values (Toseland, 2017).Then, evaluate the dynamics (communication, cohesion, social integration, influence) of the therapy group shown in the Group video.
