The swimmer champion, who is in his early 30s, lied to the public that, together with three swimmers, he was attacked by three males disguised as policemen in Rio De Janeiro while walking during the night. The scandal was popularly recognized as the "LochteGate." A video later emerged showing that Lochte and his friends had a stop and the gas station and damaged a restroom, which led to their detention. It was easy to detect that the swimmers were lying from the inconsistency in their story. When asked about the scandal and whether Lochte would emerge from it unharmed, Michael Phelps replied: "we have good people taking care of it, so hopefully" (Carneglia N.p).
