Linked ApplicationA conceptual model is defined as a set of general and abstract concepts that are used to explain phenomena of interest related to a certain discipline. The main function of conceptual models is to communicate the links that exist between phenomena in a coherent way (Butts & Rich, 2018, p.96). Theories are one or more concrete concepts that are derived from conceptual models. Theories usually vary in their level of scope and abstraction. Grand theories have more abstraction and a broader scope while middle range theories have a narrower scope, limited concepts and concrete abstracts (Fawcett & DeSanto-Madeya, 2013, p.15). Theorists develop middle-range theories from conceptual models that align with their assumptions and perceptions of the world. An example of a middle-range theory that is linked to a conceptual model is Roy’s theory of adaptation during childbirth derived from the Adaptation Model (2018, p. 104).Roy’s Adaptation Model focuses on the changes that human beings experience as they and their environments adapt. The main elements of this model are adaptation, the person, nursing environment, stimuli and health. Roy defines adaptation as the process where human beings become integrated with their environment through conscious choices (Butts & Rich, 2018, p. 458).
