This model can be used as a guidance for initiating and applying culturally responsive care. being culturally competent is an ongoing process developed over time. In my current practice setting of the NICU, we not only care for the patient, but the parents and family of the infant. Because all cultures differ and even individual values and beliefs of a particular culture vary, learning culturally competent care is a necessity. By providing culturally competent care we can customize our education to the infants parents and families based on their cultural beliefs and values ( Campinha- Bacote, 2012). There are five components of this model. The first component is based on the belief that cultural competence is a process, and not an event( Campinha- Bacote, 2012). The second component of this model is that there are five constructs of cultural competence. Those include: cultural awareness, knowledge, skill, encounters, and desire.
