However, the U.S. still leads other countries in the number of people incarcerated in its prisons. Although the U.S has only 5 of the worlds population, American prisons hold about a quarter of the worlds prison population. The bulk of the inmates are convicted for drug possession and trafficking. Imprisonment is not only costly to the tax payer bust also has negative impact on the cohesion of the American society. Beside better policies, the country needs intelligent, competent and inspiring prison leadership to achieve sustainable correctional reforms. At federal level, the leader must have the capacity accept that the institution is lacking, and to picture a better correctional institution that serves the correction needs of the inmates. President Obama is remembered for introducing the reform to reduce the number of inmates in the United States prisons.
