Current Issues in Correctional Management Name Institutional affiliation Current Issues in Correctional Management Introduction Current trends refer to the general direction of behavior within the prison setup. When congress introduced federal prisons in 1895, the objective of the institutions was to punish inmates by breaking the spirit of the prisoner and deterring future engagement in actions that contradicted the codes of conducts of the society. The goal has however changed as the society increasingly becomes inclined towards treating all people with dignity, including inmates. Currently, prison aim at behavior improvement to convert inmates into productive members of the society. Nevertheless, the institutions are facing new challenges in achieving their goals. Common challenges to correctional management include the rising prevalence of gangs and gang violence, illegal drugs and other contraband, gender and transgender related issues, and medical and mental health issues within the correctional population.
