Module 3: JournalDepartment of Criminal Justice, Southern New Hampshire UniversitySCS-285 Research Literacy in Social Science 02:05:54 GMT -05:00Understanding the relations among adverse childhood experiences (ACE), substance use, and re-offending among detained youth used a quantitative approach to answer their question. The study followed 417 youth between the age of nine and seventeen. Upon entry into the system the youth were ask a series of questions to determine their ACE score. The ACE score consist of questions about abuse, neglect and household dysfunction. The participants were as to answer yes/no to the three categories. No was given a zero while yes was given a one. The Massachusetts Youth Screening Inventory-2 (MAYSI-2) was used to determine substance abuse by the children. Once again a binary code was used answering one for yes and zero for no (Weber & Lynch, 2021).This method succeeded in showing that high ACE scored were a factor for minors to reoffend and to have higher substance abuse problems. This research shows that at risk youth need to have more rehabilitation and more stable households to curve the reentry rate. This also showed that more screening should be done on youth to getthem the proper help
