The officer started by building rapport and mirroring, establishing a positive and comfortable relationship with the suspect, encouraging him to share more information willingly, gaining his trust. The officer also used open-ended and closed-ended questions, allowing Johnny to provide detailed and unrestrained information along with clarifying information. He also used cognitive interviewing and the confrontation method when he caught the suspect being inconsistent with his story contradicting the evidence. For instance, when he claimed he wore a different pair of shoes and the victim told the officer that he wore white Jordans, the exact same shoe he wore to the interview or when hetold the officer he gave the victim's phone to his friend and then changed his story later stating he gave it to her, and the officer confronted him about it.
