These conditions create an environment ripe for sexual violence, affecting incarcerated individuals differently based on gender and sexual orientation.For men, overcrowded conditions lead to more conflicts. The masculine culture within male prisons creates a breeding ground for abusive behavior, were stronger inmates prey on weaker ones. Women face distinct challenges such as lack of access to feminine hygiene products and higher rates of sexual coercion from both inmates and staff. LGBTQ individuals are particularly vulnerable due to discrimination and isolation, often experiencing harassment and assault (National Institute of Justice, 2013).Federal policies aimed at improving prison conditions include the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, which established standards for preventing, detecting, and responding to sexual abuse in correctional facilities.
