Anorexia Nervosa {Ans: Disorder significantly more common in woman and is manifested by weight loss and amenorrhea. Exact cause is unknown, but family and social factors appear to play a significant role, with some patients experiencing a loss of control or need to regain control. May be associated with obsessive or compulsive behaviors, anxiety, or depression. Presents with behavioral symptoms including distorted body image and intense fear of weight gain. Excessive weight loss leads to body weight at least 15% below normal for age and gender. Often associated with amenorrhea in females. Physical exam findings may include hypotension, bradycardia, dry skin, peripheral edema, and excess body hair. Dx with lab abnormalities of anemia, electrolyte disturbances, vitamin or protein deficiencies, and decreased levels of LH and FSH. Tx depends on severity, and may include intense psychotherapy, hospitalization, and nutritional intervention.
