One goal of optimal healthcare is to offer patients safe, high-quality, and efficient health services (McFarlan, 2020). Due to the unexpected outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, drastic demand issues have been met by intensive care units (ICUs) all over the world, specifically neonatal ICUs, in my experience. The healthcare environment in NICUs is experiencing economic issues regarding supply and demand. Patient capacity and acuity remain at an all-time high, with inadequate nursing staff to safely cover each patient, resulting in an unsafe nursing workload. Though the COVID-19 virus did not often infect neonates, NICUs oversaw increased patient capacity as they would admit overflow patients throughout the childrens hospital.
