If I had to make a choice in the given circumstances I would have made the choice of having political rights ahead of economic self-sufficiency. This is because before the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States the slaves although freed, were not given any legal status and they were suffering from dilemmas, oppressions, and agonizing hardships due to such identity crisis. The slaves were freed but they were not recognized as citizens of the United States of America and such obscurity made it possible for the horrific days of enslavement to come back and oppress these freed men and women in some other forms. Hence, I think in that circumstance the political rights that were provided by the Fourteenth Amendment were much more important than economic benefits as these political rights were necessary for the freed slaves of the United States to sustain their life in the American society. These political rights provided these wretched men and women with some reason to carry on their life in a society that was full of individuals who were nothing but different oppressors in disguise of civilized men.
