Two important acts brought into place are the Controlling the Assault of Non-solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act, 2003 and the No Electronic Theft (NET) Act, 1997. The two of these acts both became necessary with the invention and prominence of the internet. CAN-SPAM helps to protect citizens from emails while NET protects industry from mass file sharing. The CAN-SPAM act was created to help protect users from massive amounts of junk email. With the advent of the internet came the introduction of email. Email gave everyone the ability to send messages to other people with email addresses. Emails can contain everything you would send through the regular mail, but has the advantage of arriving to its audience almost immediately. It became very simple to send a message to anyone whose email address you possessed. Its ease of use allowed businesses and hackers to send emails to millions of recipients simultaneously.
