The coming of age growth that Bulosan accounts speaks not only of his individual perspective, experience and identity but also that of the growing Filipino community in America that was rapidly growing in the early 20th century. Bulosan reveals in his personal history the determination and perseverance of immigrants that has come to dene America. As Bulosan describes his inner and outer turmoils and hopes both in the Philippines and America themes of equality, prejudice, and disenchantment emerge.
