The NASW Code of Ethics serves six purposes according to the (NASW 2017): 1. Identifies core values on which social work’s mission is based 2. Summarizes broad ethical principles that reflect social work's core values and sets specific ethical standards to serve as a guideline 3. To help social workers identify any relevant considerations when professional obligations conflict or any unethical certainties arrive 4. Provide ethical standards so that the general public is able to hold the social work profession accountable 5. Socializes practitioners new to the field of social work on the mission, values, ethical standards, and ethical principles 6.
