Introduction The individual introduced in this vignette is a 45-year-old Hispanic female named Melissa. She has been referred to the treatment center through the court system. Melissa was raised in Compton California by her mother and father, and that her father was an alcoholic. She has witnessed domestic violence as a child between her parents, as well as her mother physically abusing her sister and brother. However, when Melissa was 9 years old her family dynamics changed as her parents reportedly experienced a “spiritual awakening” and her father stopped drinking, as well as the abuse from her mother stopped. Melissa began experimenting with alcohol at the age of 10, and experienced suicide ideation at the age of 14 which led to 2 attempts. By age 26 she had been arrested for 5 DUI’s. She was mandated to complete DUI programs, 12-step meetings, and was incarcerated twice for the DUI’s and has been in and out of rehabilitation programs that have not been successful.
