Teen Marijuana Usage and CBT TreatmentTeens that engage in marijuana usage are exposed to a variety of risk factors that can affect their current and future, mental and physical health. Examples of the risk factors associated can be a pattern of dependence and withdrawal symptoms that have been evidenced as a commonality that many adolescents experience. Adolescent marijuana usage has been an increasing problem within the United States, and the evidence-based practice model of CBT has been proven to be an effective treatment.Van Scovoc, Stanger, & Budney (2009) examined marijuana use and adolescents. They found that marijuana is the most widely used substance for this population, and the need for help is increasing in the United States. In the 1990’s, adolescents seeking treatment increased significantly. Currently, about half of the individuals who seek treatment are under 25 years of age, and over two thirds report marijuana as their primary choice of substance.
