It is an integral feature in well-being and psychological health since it allows one to perceive being in control of personal life and influences motivation in a big way. Self-determination is applicable in various settings such as health, parenting, work, education, and conflict management. Thus, it is apparent that self-determination influences all aspects of an individual’s life. During mediation, the mediator embraces the concepts of self-determination in ensuring that the conflicts are resolved amicably even though the conflicting parties determine the outcome. As a mediator, self-determination ensures that the mediation process's goal is realized since the plans are made in advance. Self-determination ensures that realistic decisions and choices are made after listening to the conflicting parties and embracing emotional intelligence (Trigueros et al.). More so, while mediating, one needs to consider limitations and strengths between the individuals differing. The mediator also needs to acknowledge that the conflict's outcome will reflect the mediator’s competence, connection, and autonomy over the other parties.
