The interest in the topic has been fueled by the wider development in the field of positive psychology movement that is geared towards eliminating those factors that have been blamed for the rising cases of negative psychological states among employees (Bailey et al., 2015). Despite the interest that the concept has generated, a great deal of confusion exists about its actual definition. Khan (1990), who is widely accredited for conducting the first academic research on the topic, referred to it as personal engagement Khan (1990) opined that personal engagement or disengagement occurs in situations where people in an organization engages or decline to engage their personal selves when they carrying out their work-related responsibilities. Khans arguments generated a lot of interest from researchers and since then a lot of publications have been done on the topic. However, scholars have had different definitions and conceptualization of what employee engagement is. For instance, various scholars who have written about the concept have failed to agree on one single definition.
