Often, people suffering from addiction have the compulsion to usecertain substances despite their obvious negative financial or health impact. While most people perceive substance addiction as a mild challenge that is dependent on the abuser’s will to abandon the vice, in reality it is a more complex condition phenomenon. Both the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA) recognize it as a mental illness. The DSM-Valso identifies the condition as Substance Use Disorder. The photos are evidence that poverty is the main driver for substance addiction. As such, there is need to create policies that tackle both the addiction and its underlying causes.
