PII ProtectionName:Institutional AffiliationIntroductionPrivacy is becoming an important value for individuals, and therefore, it is not surprising to see institutions investing heavily in data security to keep Personal Identifiable Information (PII) safe. PII refers to any information that identifies an individual or his/her location. It may include the name, passport, social security number, telephone number, home address, email address, billing, and transaction record among others, in either physical or electronic form. Organizations keep PII of their employees, customers, patients, supporters and suppliers for various reasons. There are tough legal penalties for an organization that intentionally or accidentally fails to protect personal data, after it was discovered that organizations do not do their best to willingly safeguard the privacy of information in their possession. The credibility of such organizations is also at stake. Industries such as the health care industry have established standards for health care providers, big and small alike, considered best practice in the industry. Some businesses use cookies to collect personal information about individuals who visit their websites for marketing purposes or to improve the quality of services. However, in an uncontrolled environment, PII is prone to misuse.
