Liberal arguments in Support and Criticizing British Rule in IndiaName:Course:Date:Liberal arguments in Support and Criticizing British Rule in India Generally, most traditional societies have a tendency to adopt an authoritarian system of governance. Such systems subscribe to a specific manner of understanding as being universally correct and unquestionable thereby imposing it by law, religion, or opinion on the whole society as the only acceptable cultural norm (Berry, 1993, p.103; Craighead et al., 2000, p.1421). In contrast, a liberal society is considerably tolerant, accepting the possibility that understanding the world is multifaceted and that any manner of understanding may be right and acceptable. Such societies also subscribe to the option of worldviews being partial in their accuracy and therefore allow a freedom of competition between competing worldviews (Deutsch& Fishman, 2010, p. 50). With regard to British rule in India, arguments can be made for the perpetuation of education and the development of Indian scholars, the proliferation of women’s rights through British taught Indian scholars, acceptance of Indian nationals under British privileges, and the induction of freedom and liberties for Indian natives.
