Unit 6 Discussion: Meaning of Nursing Theory to Advanced Practice NursingThe theory which speaks to my nursing practice is Orem’s self-care deficit theory. It is a commonly used model in many practice settings because it promotes self-care in patients, nurses and the patient’s family during the recovery process. Orem’s explanation of self-care deficit is when a patient or their family is unable to provide care, a deficit exists that can only be addressed by the nurse (Masters, 2015, p.154). The main propositions of this theory are that human beings have the ability to perform self-care activities on their own, self-care that is therapeutic in nature involves the actions of patients, nurses and others who can meet these self-care needs and nurses evaluate the ability of patients to meet their self-care needs or their potential of not performing self-care (Drevenhorn, 2018). Orem’s theory has a lot of benefits in my current and future practice because it has been integrated into the nursing process under four operations which are diagnosis, prescriptive, regulatory and control operations (2015, p.161). The diagnostic stage involves establishing the nurse-patient relationship and it is here where I can assess the patient’s self-care deficits and demands for care. Most
