The plant was constructed in 1940 to treat the human waste and currently serves over 3 million people in around 76 communities by converting more than 700 million gallons of wastewater per day into marketable fertilizer. The plant can be found in the southeastern side of Detroit where it discharges the sewage sea wastewater into Rogue River and Detroit and eventually Lake Erie.
