There had never been a woman emperor or pharaoh-only a man could assume that title (Potter, 2015). Rule by women in a world in which women were not supposed to rule raises questions about why and how they ruled in spite of restraints against them (McMahon, 2013, p. 180).Both women, Tang Empress Wu Zetian of China and Pharaoh Hatshepsut of Egypt, became rulers of their countries due to unusual circumstances.
