Alec, son to d'Uberville takes the advantage of her situation to seduce her and bears his child. Tess declines to marry Angel but later kills Alec so that she could be with Angel who promises to protect her. A search party later finds them and Tess is taken to prison that signals her execution. This novel greatly incorporates the social class, race, and religion, ethnic and regional aspects as discussed below.
