The combatants included the majority of the European countries and former countries such as the Soviet Union, Germany, Italy, France, Austria-Hungary the Ottoman Empire and the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Japan. The war resulted in the death of about 9 million military personnel and 7 million civilians (Spielvogel 5). Other results include the collapse of empires such as the Ottoman, Austro-Hungary, Russian and German empires, the formation of new countries, economic depression and the loss of German colonies in Europe and Africa. The causes of the war can be classified into the long-term and the short-term causes. The four major long-term causes of the Great War were; Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism. Following the victory of the Germans in the Franco-Prussian war, Germany saw the need to build a strong army to prevent the French from recapturing their lost territories. The French on the other hand also build a stronger military to deter any act of aggression from Germany.
