This is teaching that claims it is God’s will for Christians to always prosper fiscally and medically (Chia 1). It is also linked to preachers as diverse as Benny Hinn, Gloria Copeland, Joel Osteen, and Kenneth Hagin (Chia 1). Prosperity gospel claims that God has put certain pervasive laws in place which, when accurately applied by believers, can make them rich beyond their imagination. The influence of prosperity teaching among modern-day evangelical Christians must not be underestimated. In a study conducted in 2006, it was revealed that although only 17% of Christians in the US identified themselves directly with prosperity theology, 61% believed that God wants individuals to be prosperous (Chia 1). In Africa, 9 out of ten Christians believe that God would grant prosperity to all those who have enough faith.Mark 10: 29 – 30 states that, “I tell you the truth…no one who has left home or brothers or sisters…for me and the gospel will not receive a hundred times as much in the present age…and in the age to come, eternal life”
