According to our text, “social groups help shape our identities and are referred to as agents of socialization” (Vissing, 2011). The two groups of socialization agents are primary and secondary groups. The Primary group consists of family and friends and people that we are close to. The Secondary group consists of people that we work with or that we are acquainted with on a regular basis. As babies we start out with the primary group, we absorb the care and love from those in our family and learn from them. As children get older they are introduced to peers that is the secondary group and this can begin in daycare and follow up in school or church. Friends have an important role in or lives for our growth and well-being (Vissing, 2011). The primary and secondary groups are both import in sculpting the people we are and isolation is not a good factor for anyone’s well-being. I do in fact believe that socializing agents contribute to an institutionalized system of social inequality. Certain things are expected of us as children and later in life as adults.
