Search for an Alternative TestName:Information affiliationSearch for an Alternative Test: Minnesota Biolab Case StudyIntroductionSepsis is a life threatening medical condition that results from an overwhelming immune response to an infection. Major cases of sepsis occur when a patient is injected with chemicals to fight infection, but instead trigger widespread inflammation that may lead to multiple organ failure. To minimize the risk of the condition, the injectable drug is usually tested outside the human body, usually in animals such as rabbits to observe the reaction. During the process, the animals often died of the condition. In the case study, “The search for an alternative test”, as the result of increasing pressure from animal rights in the United States, Minnesota Biolab (MB) was compelled to seek an alternative method for detecting sepsis. This led to the acquisition of the Rhodes Island based company that had managed to develop a method known as the Sepsis Detection Test (SDT). Instead of using live rabbits, the method uses blood drawn from the horseshoe crabs, and the animal released back to the sea. Companies are often compelled to change their strategies due to the new developments
