There are four theories that explain leadership. The trait theory describes the types of characters that a leader must possess. They include likability, integrity, ability to make good decision and assertiveness. Such traits can either be learned or be inborn. Behavioral theory on the other hand is concerned about how leaders behave. Autocratic leaders make decisions for their teams or organization with minimum contribution coming from the individuals being led. Democratic leaders allow the group members to actively take part in making important decisions that affects the other employees, while Laissez-faire leaders allow the group members to make decisions with minimal supervision. Contingency theories determine good leadership with their ability to handle certain situations. Finally, the Power and Influence theories state that leaders can influence others using their authority in the organization, in form of reward and punishment.
