The scenario talks about the ongoing escalation for criminal sentencing from the early1990’s until present day today. One major talking point within this theory is the “three-strike rule” and how mass imprisonment has occurred as a result. It is highly debated that about whether or not this rule has been effective in discouraging people from committing crimes. The rule states that repeat offenders should serve longer prison sentences. This rule has also made itto where penalties reflect towards serious offenses. The three-strike rule also plays a large part in the problem of overcrowding within jails and prisons (Adler, 2020).Due to the Social Control Theory, criminologists have supported the three-strike rule legislation. The development of the three-strike rule was meant to encourage the community to follow and obey the laws that are implemented within society. The main goal of the three-strike rule is to keep communities safe from repeat offenders of crime. Criminologists will continue to place an important emphasis on protecting the public while also preventing crime.
