A psychological test is used to measure variables by using devices or procedures to gather information about behaviors. Measuring and observing an individual's behaviors aids a psychologist in ensuring that there is a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.Tests and assessments are two separate, but related, components of a psychological evaluation. Both types of tools are used to help a psychologist develop a treatment plan and arrive at a diagnosis (“Understanding Psychological Testing and Assessment,” 2022). According to the American Psychological Association states “Testing involves the use of formal tests such as questionnaires or checklists” (“Understanding Psychological Testing and Assessment,” 2022). Generally, the tests are standardized (norm-referenced) so that individuals are evaluated in the same manner, no matter who administers the test or where they live.
