1BasicLifeSupport(BLS)isthetypeofcarethateveryoneshouldpossessincaseofemer gencybecauseyoucansavesomeone'slife.Itisespeciallyessentialworkinginthehealthcarefieldandmostemployeessuchasfirstrespondersandhealthcareprovidersmustobtaintrainingtobecertifiedtoworkinthemedicalfield.BLSrequiresknowledgeandskillsinCardiopulmonaryResuscitation,commonlyknownasCPR,torelieveairwayobstructionstoanindividualtorelieverespiratorydistresswithalsotheuseofautomatedexternaldefibrillators(AED).CPRinceptiondatesbackasearlyasthe1700 s.In1740Mouth-to-MouthresuscitationwasthefirsttechniqueusedondrowningvictimsandinfactisthekeycomponentforCPRtrainingtoday .Itisatechniqueusedtoassistindividualswhohavestoppedbreathing.Duringthe18thand19thcenturieschestcompressionswerestartingtobecomecommontoassistindividualswhowereexperiencingcardiacemer gencies.TheMouth-to-Mouthtechniqueisnotnecessarytobeusedwhengivingcompressiontoavictimwhoisexperiencingcardiacemer genciesbutiscommonlyusedatthesametimestilltillthisday .Usingthecompressiontechniquehashadahugeimpactonvictimsbecauseitreducesthechanceofdeath.CPRwasof ficiallydevelopedin1960andwasendorsedin1963.In1979theAdvancedCardiacLifeSupportwasdevelopedanddesignedforhealthcareprofessionalstoobtaintrainingsotheycanperformCPRandadministermedicationstovictimsduring2lifesavingemer gencies.CPRisnowthemostestablishedandstandardtechniqueusedtosavelivesnotonlyinthehealthcarefieldbutbetweentwocompletestrangerspassingeachotherinthestreet.Thereisaguidelinethathastobefollowedwhenitcomestocompressionstoventilationandtheratioisdif ferentbetweenadults,childrenandinfants.Theratioalsodependsifthereare1or2rescuerspresentandiftherescuer(s)waspresenttowitnessthecollapse.Whilegivingcompressionswithoutanadvancedairwaytheratioforadultsandolderchildrenare30:2whichmeanstherescuermustperform30compressionsfollowedby2rescuebreaths.TheCPRratioforinfantsandchildrenarealsothesamebutonlydif ferswhenitcomestohowmanyrescuersarepresentbecausewhenthereare2rescuerspresenttheratiowillbe15:2whichmeansyouwillneedtoperform15compressionsfollowedby2rescuebreaths.Whilegivingcompressionswithanadvancedairwaythesametechniqueisusedforadults,childrenandinfants.Continuouscompressionsatarateof100-120/minandabreathof1forevery6seconds.Therearedif ferenttechniquestousewhengivingCPRwhichareMouth-to-Mouth,Mouth-to-BarrierdevicebreathingandMouth-to-Maskbreathing.Mouth-to-Mouthisveryef fectivewhendeliveringoxygentotheindividualbecausetherescuers'exhaledairis17%oxygenand4%carbondioxidewhichisincontrast100%whenventilationisavailable.Mouth-to-Mouthresuscitationcanbequitedangerousbecausethevictim'sfacecouldbecoveredinbloodfromacaraccidentorthevictimisveryillsotheycouldpassharmfulbacteriaorpathogenstotherescuerswhichmakesthetechniquehighrisk.3TheMouth-to-BarrierdevicetechniqueisamuchsafertechniqueusedwhengivingCPR.TheMouth-to-Barrierdeviceisaplasticshieldthatfitsoverthevictimsmouthandismadesotherescuerdoesnothavetoactuallytouchthevictimsskinwhileadministeringbreathsthroughtheventonthedevice.Itisasafertechniquebecauseitnotonlyprotectstherescuerfromcommunicablediseasesbutthevictimaswell.TheMouth-to-MasktechniqueisalsoasafertechniquetousecomparedtoMouth-to-Mouthresuscitation.Themaskscomeinavarietyofsizestofitthevictimsfaces.Thereareafewdif ferencesbetweentheMouth-to-MasktechniqueandtheMouth-to-Barriertechnique.TheMouth-to-Maskisamaskthatisfittedonthevictimsfaceandoncepositionedcorrectlytherescuercreatesapropersealthemselvesandadministersbreathsthroughitthatway .Therisksarehigherwhenusingthistechniquebecausetherescuerhastotouchskintoskinwhenfittingthemaskbutthereisalowerriskofingestinginfectiousbacteriaastheywoulddoingmouthtomouth.AutomatedExternalDefibrillator ,alsoknownasAED,isamachinethatuseselectricalshocktotreatanindividualwhoisexperiencingcardiacarrest.AEDmachinesaremadeofonly4keycomponentswhicharetheBattery ,Capacitor ,theProcessorandtheElectrodePads.TheElectrodePadsarestickypadsthatareappliedtotheindividual schestandtransferstheshocktotheirheart,whilemonitoringtheirheartrhythmatthesametime.Thebatteryisimportantbecauseitisusedtochar gethecapacitorpartoftheAEDsoitcandeliverthelifesavingshocksalongwithrunningdiagnosticstomakesuretheAEDstaysrunningproperly .TheCapacitormaycomeindif ferentsizesbutitisused4tostoreenoughener gytoreleasetosavesomeone'slife.TheProcessoristhepartoftheAEDthatmonitorsandanalyzestheindividual'sshockablerhythm.ThereareimportantstepstofollowwhenusinganAEDmachineafteranalyzingthepatienttoseeif91 1needstobecalledfirstandperformingCPR.Firstyoumustturnonthemachineandfollowtheaudioinstructions.Second,exposetheindividual'sbarechest.Third,applytheelectrodepadstotheindividual'sbareskin.Aftertheelectrodepadsareapplied,allowtheAEDmachinetoanalyzetheindividual'sheartrhythm.NextmakesurenobodyaroundtouchestheindividualwhileallowingtheAEDmachinetodeliverthedefibrillationshocks.TheAEDthenwillinstructyouwhenitissafetoperformHands-OnlyCPR.If2rescuersareavailablewhenanindividualexperiencescardiacarrestthefirstrescuermustbeginCPRwhilethesecondrescueractivatestheAEDmachineandbeginstheprocess.TheprocessofperformingCPRonachokingvictimisthesameforallagesbutthereareseveralstepstotakeandyoumustthinkfastandthinkclearly
