Page 1 of 7 10/19/2016 Investigation of vehicle handling quality during a step steer maneuver Abstract: During this research phase, we use step steer maneuvers to evaluate various aspects of vehicle handling quality. The step steer maneuver requires a rapid and intentional steering input, contributing to overall handling performance and safety. We will use both Computational and Experimental methods to conduct a detailed assessment. Experimental testing will occur in a controlled environment, and real-time data such as Lateral Acceleration, Tire Forces, and Yaw rate will be collected. The goal of this research is to optimize handling quality, responsiveness, and stability, which will ultimately improve the performance and safety of automobiles. Introduction: Step steer maneuver is a driving technique that involves a quick change in the vehicle's direction by alternating the steering input between left and right in quick succession. This maneuver is commonly used in high-speed driving situations such as rally races; it quickly changes its direction without losing speed. In this research, we will use car sim and Matlab to analyze the stability, handling, and response to driver inputs. Car sim provides a user-friendly interface for running simulations and is used to improve the various aspects of vehicle dynamics
