Pharyngitis {Ans: Inflammation of the pharynx and tonsils. Viral or bacterial (GABHs, N. gonorrhoeae), also allergic rhinitis or post nasal drip. Risks: crowded work or living conditions. Symptoms: Viral - sore throat, fever, malaise, cough, h/a, myalgia, fatigue, rhinitis, congestion, conjunctivitis; Strep - sudden onset sore throat, fever, chills, h/a, N/V, rhinitis, cough. Findings: Viral - mild erythema of pharynx with little or no exudate; Bacterial - marked erythema of throat, exudates, tender anterior cervical lymphadenopathy, erythematous "sandpaper" rash/accentuation in groin and axillae with scarlet fever. Diagnostics: strep test, cultures PRN. Management: hydration, saline gargles, topical anesthetics.
