Chapter 4 Introduction :Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) was a feminist theorist and philosopher. Her contribution to the feminist theories is based on the continental traditions of existentialism and phenomenology. Her approach was more aligned towards cultural oppressions to women and less on laws and rights the role of the woman as the other to man’s self was her point of interest and she refers to this otherness in all her writings .her book The Second Sex, deals with this otherness of the woman which undertook a sweeping analysis of all the ideas and forces that conspired to keep women in a subordinate position relative to men. The otherness who is the woman is now a very powerful source to reckon with. This book had a telling impact on all other feminist theorists and philosophers. Her definition of what a woman is very rightly answered by her in the following words,” “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman,” was successfully able to bridge the gaps between the male dominated world of philosophy but also gained them momentum towards the feminist theories .this created a broad platform for all woman to think and act
