Module 7: The Beginning of the Cold WarDuring the stage of the Cold War there were important changes that reshaped the geopolitical landscape. One of the significant was the introduction of the Truman Doctrine. Declared in 1947 this marked a shift, in U.S. Policy towards containing Soviet expansionism. President Trumans announcement that America would provide military assistance to nations threatened by communism with a focus on Greece and Turkey set the foundation for a long term ideological battle between the United States and the Soviet Union. This doctrine not expressed Americas commitment to defending democracy. Also sent a message to the world that it was willing to confront the Soviet Union in order to maintain global stability. As such it played a role during this period.Additionally another pivotal development in the years of the Cold War was the establishment of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Established in 1949 NATO consisted of countries including Canada, European nations and notably United States well.
