I n don esia nD ev il sC haino fL it e ra cyIndonesiaisinareadingliteracycrisis.Despitethemanybenefitsthatreadingliteracycanprovide,includingexpandingknowledgeandimprovingcriticalthinkingskills,itseemsthatthehabitofreadingisnotafirstchoiceamongIndonesianpeople.Literacycrisishasbeenadevil'schaininIndonesiaforgenerations.Asaresult,manypeopleinIndonesia,especiallyyoungpeople,lackknowledge.BasedonaresearchMostLitter edNationintheW orldbyCentralConnecticutStateUniversityinMarch2016,Indonesiaison60thplaceoutof61countriesintermsofreadingliteracy .Indonesianspassionforliteracyislackingduetolackofsupportfromfamilyandschools,limitedfacilitiesoflibraries,andef fectsofsocialmedia.ThelackofpassionforreadingliteracyamongIndonesiansstartsearlyinthefamily .ThemaincauseisbecausemanyIndonesianparentsdonothelpchildrenformareadinghabit.AccordingtotheIndonesianNationalSocio-EconomicSurvey(SUSENAS),only1outof100Indonesianhouseholdshadalibraryin2019.Thisindicatesthereisalackofemphasisonreadingandliteracyathome.AsurveybytheNationalBookCommitteealsofoundthatonly12%ofIndonesianparentsreadtotheirchildrendaily ,andover60%didnot.OneofthefactorswhyIndonesianparentsdonotcultivateareadinghabitintheirchildrenisbecausetheythemselvesdonotcultivateareadinghabit.Itisimpossibleforchildrentounderstandtheimportanceofreadingiftheparentsthemselvesdonotunderstandandarenotpassionateaboutreading.Therefore,itaf fectsthechildrenthatgrowupinhouseholds.W ithoutareadinghabit,childrenwillgrowupwithlowcriticalthinkingandwillbeeasilyinfluencedbywrongideologiesintheglobalizationera.Italsoinfluenceschildren sacademicperformanceasstudieshaveshownthatchildrenwhogrowupinhomeswithmorebookstendtoperformbetteracademicallyandhavegreaterimagination.AnotherreasonforlackofreadingliteracyinIndonesiaisbecauseofthelimitedfacilitiesoflibrariesandlackofschoolsencouragement.Foronething,thereareonlylimitedsourcesandfacilitiesoflibrariesinIndonesia.BasedonthelatestreportofIndonesia snationallibrary ,Indonesianeeds7.094libraries,yettherearestillonly600libraries,whichisonly6%ofthetotalneed.Nottomention,manyIndonesianlibrariesarealsoseenasdirty ,cramped,old,andlackingairvents.Asaresult,notmanypeoplewanttospendtimeinalibrarytoread.Inaddition,schoolsinIndonesiaarenotsupportiveenoughtobuildareadinghabitamongtheirstudents.AstudybytheIndonesianReadingForumfoundthatonly2.2%ofschoolsinIndonesiahadlibraries.Evenso,thequalityofthecollectionandlibrary smanagementareinadequate.NottomentionastudybytheIndonesianChildren sandY outhLiteratureCommunityalsofoundthatmanyIndonesianschools'curriculumsdonotprioritizereadingandliteracydevelopment.Nowonderwhymanystudentsdonotgrowaninteresttowardslibrariesandreading.Socialmediaalsomakesitmorechallengingtoformareadinghabit.Especiallyforyoungpeoplewhoselivescannotbesetapartfromsocialmedia.Firstthing,socialmediacreatesdistraction.Itisdesignedtokeepusersengagedandscrolling,andoftenleadingtolossfocused.Asaresult,peoplearemorelikelytoscrollandreceiveinformationfromsocialmediainsteadofreadingbooksandanyotherreadingmedia.Basedonmyownexperience,IoftenpostponereadingunfinishedbooksbecauseIthoughtIwasbusydoingcampusassignments.Inreality ,whenIfinallyhavefreetime,IoftenchoosetoscrollthroughInstagramratherthanfinishingthebooks.Secondly ,socialmediaprovidesinstantgratification.Itprovidesimmediatefeedbackandrewards,suchaslikes,comments,andshares.Itcanalsogivebriefinformation,andoftenfalseinformation,inamatterofseconds.Incontrast,readingbooksrequirespatienceanddedicationwithbenefitsthatarenotinstant.Therefore,manyyoungpeopleandevenadultsaremorelikelytoaccessinformationfromsocialmediaratherthanreadingabookoranyothermediathatrequiresreadingwhichiswhytheIndonesianrateofreadingliteracyislow .Inshort,lackofsupportfromfamily ,schoolsencouragement,andtheroleofsocialmediahasabigpartofhinderingIndonesianspassionforreadingliteracy .ThesefactorswillendangerIndonesia syoungpeoplesqualitieswhoarethefutureleadersofthecountry .MoreattentionshouldbepaidtothisissuesincethereadinginterestindexofpeopleinIndonesiaissaidtoonlyreach0,001percent.Itmeans,outof1.000peopleonly1personlikestoread.ThenumberofreadinginterestsmightgoupifencouragementisvocalizedmoreuntilitbecomesahabitoracultureofIndonesiancitizens.
