While many operations will place soldiers in harm’s way, the role of the military is to provide physical and mental health care for soldiers who have experienced conditions resulting in the need for care. While this policy has long been implemented for all personnel engaged in direct conflict, it has also been overlooked for many drone pilots, presumably because this role does not involve in-person conflict. Nevertheless, this type of remote operation by a drone pilot can also cause significant psychological traumas due to the nature of the process: the drone pilot will conduct a strike in the same manner that a ground soldier might operate machinery, with the only difference being the amount of distance between operator and target.
