Brief background information about Xenophobia & the persons of interest Xenophobia is the fear, hatred, or prejudice of those who are perceived to be foreign or strange. It stems from two Greek words, "Xenos" (which can mean either "stranger" or "guest") and "Phobos (which can either mean "flight" or "fear") (Hades, 2022). It hurts everyone when the dominant group in a society view someone as unusual or foreign, not just immigrants. In the medical sense, it is not a phobia but rather a pervasive kind of prejudice and discrimination. Attacks committed by xenophobes against immigrants are seriously harming South Africa's reputation throughout the continent. Who is responsible? That is the question. We must concentrate on our "self-concept" in order to respond to that question. Since our selves sometimes naturally feel selish (hence the very term selfish!), and in many situations they have strong impulses to do what is best for themselves (Lekganya, 2023). But in my opinion, it's because South Africa is one of the world's most unequal nations. More than 50% of people are considered poor. The colonial and apartheid racist legacies of South Africa, as well as the country's subsequent failures to restructure the economy and society, are
