It is one of the largest processors of pelagic fish, and mackerel and herring are among the other species it processes. When Beothic was founded in 1967, it was not equipped to handle capelin. The capelin issue wasn't resolved until 1979 when Valleyfield finished building its state-of-the-art cold storage facility and added new blast freezers (King & Stapleton, 1993). Also, capelin had a big impact on Beothic's overall financial performance by 1989.
