AbstractThe Victorian era was a time of major change in society. There was a huge discrepancy between the values of society and what happens in reality. It was a society full of lies that depends heavily on pretense. The most important writer in the Victorian era is Charles Dickens because he wrote novels that reflected the harsh reality of society. Dickens believed in the power of writing in reforming society, so he used his novels for social reform. This paper aims to discuss how Great Expectations provides a social criticism for the society Dickens lived in. There are multiple social evils that Dickens try to reform through Great Expectations, but this paper will only discuss three of them. The main three social evils Dickens discuss in the novel are child maltreatment, social inequality, and the dehumanization of man. Dickens criticizes those social evils through the representation of characters and the negative effect of those social evils on them.
