12/15/20Ryan Sweeting Research Proposal Title: Psychosocial and Behavioral implications of opioid misuse in the National Football League (NFL)Topic: Opiate Dependence for NFL Athletes is Palpable: An examination of the benefits and risks associated with NFL players currently undergoing ‘pain management’Abstract/Summary: Opiate addiction among professional athletes has been researched and adequately documented in the past; however, data pertaining to opioid use and misuse among the NFL community remains limited. Considering the: a) violent nature of the sport b) maximum physical demand c) financial incentive - effective pain management becomes vital for the individual athlete and overall success of the organization. The culture of pain management in the National Football League (NFL) is potentially predisposing athletes to a considerably inhibited future and thralls of addiction. The documented amount of pills (number of milligrams) players consume on a given day is staggering and is suggestive of inhibited psychosocial and behavioral effects. The proposed study will 1) attempt to identify these effects 2) explore how they might intensify the risk of substance use disorder or some form of chemical dependence.1.0 - Past Literature/ Background: 1.1 - The National Football League (NFL) - The
