Technical requirements established here indicate a rather weak network security posture with regards to transfer and sharing of sensitive data with staff members and students alike. As a solution to fulfilling this technical requirement, there is a need to implement the RSA cryptosystem at UMUC. To be more specific, Public Key Infrastructure is the most ideal solution that suits the aforementioned technical requirements, which makes use of a public key and a private key to safeguard data in transit and at rest 1. The rationale behind use of PKI as a solution here is that both, student and staff-specific data maintained and shared within the universitys network is highly sensitive. Manipulation of these data may lead to detrimental outcomes, which is why rigorous security is needed.
